Someone News: Design, Events, Fine Press

Recent Work

Alongside our commercial work, Someone maintains a letterpress and type collection, collected over 35 years.

We design, print and bind fine press books and ephemera with the participation of an authentic master printer and several well-seasoned apprentices. While the process is exacting and demanding, our fine print group is eager to publish and produce print collectibles, employing our museum-grade collection of lead and wood type and our secret stash of local and imported fine papers and archival leather.

And at Someone, because we’re designers, we continuously explore the possibilities of merging old and new technologies to produce ‘original’ graphic products.

Promoting Yoga – Promoting The Union

Seasonally, The Union promotes the high quality of its teachers and their distinctive approaches and styles of yoga, by distributing flyers door to door in the Cabbagetown community. Someone produced wonderful hand-printed flyers for the purpose, adding the distinction of letterpress printing to the graphic identity of The Union brand, successfully delivering The Union’s special offer - 'Return this flyer to The Union for a free class!'. See a sampling in the portfolio.

The Shore - available in the Store!

'The Shore' is available now in the Someone store. We've made the initial release of 51 trade copies available for sale now - check it out!

The Shore

This broadside was produced as the launch piece for Someone:Water, a nine piece series for release over the year. We printed it during our 2009 Nuit Blanche installation - Impresshorium. The poem is by 2009 Griffin winner A.F. Moritz, from his collection The Sentinel. Designed by Deborah Barnett, with an illustration she created in collaboration with Susana Wald.

A signed, lettered special release will follow to be made available as framed or unframed prints.

Someone Nuit Blanche

In the fall of 2008 Someone published a series of broadsides for Nuit Blanche 2008 in Toronto. We produced seven in the series featuring the illustration of the fantastical Seth Scriver alongside a selection of our type. There are images and copies available in the portfolio section, and in the store. These were printed on the night of the event - we opened our doors and allowed visitors to take a copy of their favorites.

The illustrations are printed from photo-polymer made from digital film output, so Seth's illustrations are scanned and then produced as bitmaps through an imagesetter. The type here is Sapphire, and it's handset from our 36pt foundry type.
